First Instagram copied the Snapchat Stories feature and now Facebook is doing it too. This new feature will allow users to share ephemeral photos and videos in a slideshow that will disappear 24 hours later.
Instagram launched Stories in August 2016 and now Facebook is jumping on the bandwagon, placing the Stories widget directly above the news feed.
According to TechCrunch:
“Facebook has long been the place to share with friends and family, but the way that people share is changing in significant ways. The way people share today is different to five or even two years ago — it’s much more visual, with more photos and videos than ever before. We want to make it fast and fun for people to share creative and expressive photos and videos with whoever they want, whenever they want.”
What Stories is all about
Facebook Stories will eventually become part of the user experience, where it allows them to create and share more content more often but not permanently attaching it to their profiles or personal brand. Give the Facebook population an opportunity to show off in front of their friends more and they’ll take it!

When Instagram implemented Stories it climbed to 150 million users on a daily basis. It will be interesting to see what results its brings to Facebook, for example the impact on ‘original sharing’, engagement and the amount of time spent on the platform.
Standing out from the crowd
Social Media Week said,
‘It’s important for brands to understand their audience and to truly know which platform and audience desires which type of content’.
Soon businesses and Pages on Facebook will be able to create mobile content that’s only live for 24 hours.
So, can social platforms ever remain unique nowadays? Kevin Systrom, Instagram founder, says:
“When you are an innovator, that’s awesome. Just like Instagram deserves all the credit for bringing filters to the forefront. This isn’t about who invented something. This is about a format, and how you take it to a network and put your own spin on it.”
